Pumpkins, Pumpkins, Pumpkins!

The rest of October has been filled with Pumpkins, Pumpkins, Pumpkins!  We have been learning about the life-cycle of a Pumpkin and what it needs to grow.  Here are some things we have done:
We created "Candy-Corn People!"

Thank you to our wonderful Doane Student, Mr. Mclintic for being brave and painting pumpkins with us! :)  We tried to keep most of it on the paper and not on ourselves!

In Math we created Haunted Houses with Ghosts to practice writing our numbers and showing quantities!

We spent two days learning about spiders.  We learned about their characteristics (2 body parts, 8 legs, not insects, etc.), read books, sang songs.  Many of the boys enjoyed talking about Spiders!

We read the book, 5 Little Pumpkins in the Math.  We acted out the story and learned the poem.  Then we created this projects to practice writing our numbers.

In Science, we read the book Pumpkin Circle.  It teaches the life-cycle of a pumpkin with real-life pictures.  We then created this Pumpkin Circle to remember the life-cycle.

On Wednesday we will be having our Fall Celebration!  We will carve pumpkins and play Fall/Halloween games!  Remember, NO Halloween Costumes to school.  Happy Fall!!

Fire Safety

The second week in October is Fire Safety Week!  What a great time we had in KE that week!  We learned all about Fire Safety and what we should do if we are in place with a fire.
1. GET OUT!
2.  CALL 911 AND FIND AN ADULT

We also learned if our clothes catch fire we should:
1.  STOP
2. DROP
3. AND ROLL

We learned many songs to helps us follow these rules!  We are lucky enough to have a student in our class who's Dad is a Firefighter.  She shared many great things with us!  Thanks Ava!
We were also VERY lucky to have a Kindergarten Teacher on our team who just became a Firefighter.  She brought all of her firefighting gear to school and we got to visit her classroom.  She shared with us each part of her gear and what and why she needed to wear it.  Thank you Ms. Bouse!  :)

We realized that firefighters look a little scary when they have all their stuff on, BUT they are not scarey AT ALL!  They keep us safe and are here to help us!

We ended our week with a school-wide fire safety assembly.  We had a fire drill and the fire trucks came to rescue a teacher out from the Second Story building.  We then met in the gym to meet the Crete Fire Department and learn about their jobs!

****Something to practice at home would be making sure students know their Primary Phone Number and Address!!  We will work on it at school too!

5 Senses!

This blog has been neglected...I apologize!  I forget how busy the "fall time" of year is!  It is by far my most favorite season, but it seems like there's so much going on!  At the beginning of October we spent a week learning about our 5 Senses:
SMELL with our NOSE
SEE with our EYES
HEAR with our EARS
TASTE with our MOUTH
TOUCH with our HANDS

I am amazed every year how well Kindergarteners do with this topic and how they are great about remember their 5 Senses.  We even talk about if we are missing one of our senses how hard it is to carry on with our daily activities and how we would have to do things differently.

To kick-off our unit we sat in a circle and air-popped popcorn!  This was definitely a highlight!  As the popcorn popped we had a class discussion about what we saw, heard, and smelled.  Once the popcorn was finished we discussed what we tasted and felt like!  We used all of our 5 Senses to pop popcorn!!

Some other 5 Senses Activities we did was sorting real objects by their 5 senses, watched a 5 Sense Brainpop Video, made a 5 Senses Book, and sang a 5 Senses Song!!
