St. Patrick's Day and Rainbows

First of all, I apologize for not blogging sooner, it seems as though life has been getting the best of me!  I have been really busy, I think it is the time of the year.  My life has been consumed by: school, grad school (two big presentations next week, but I'm almost done :), still sick-but hopefully finding out some more answers soon, planning the Elementary School Carnival (April 13th), and much more, so sorry for not blogging!

St. Patrick's Day/Rainbows!

We made these pots of gold to practice writing our numbers 0-20!  Keep practicing we will be having our test soon!

We colored these leprechaun glyphs, by following specific directions!  It was great to practice our listening skills!

Leprechauns are sure hard to catch!  We read many leprechaun stories and then made this leprechaun!

Kites to practice skip counting by 10's!

We learned the colors of the rainbow!  We also learned that light is white and when it goes through water (a raindrop) it makes colors that is how we see a rainbow!  The colors blend together in a half circle-like shape!

Hopefully I will be blogging again soon!  This week we will continue to work on numbers 0-20, writing them, identifying them, counting sets, putting them in order, etc. We will also be doing bunny and egg projects for Easter!

Dr. Seuss Wrap-Up!

We finished up our Dr. Seuss unit yesterday and today.  We are now EXPERTS at rhyming!  Check out what we did:

Read: One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish

Each student was given some colored goldfish.  We sorted them and graphed them.

We made this project to go along with the book.

We LOVED the book: There's a Wocket in my Pocket!  It had some very funny rhyming words!

We made this pocket with rhyming words.  We wrote the words to match the pictures.
We then went around the classroom and read our paper to each other.  Once we read it to a friend, we got to "sign" the back of their paper!

Continue to practice rhyming words at home!  It is even great to rhyme using words that aren't real, like: wocket-pocket-socket-rocket-locket,docket, etc.

Next, we will be doing St. Patrick's Day and Rainbow projects!  Don't forget to wear GREEN on Friday!!

Dr. Seuss Kick-Off!

Dr. Seuss' birthday is on March 3rd!  Since we were not in school that day, we celebrated his birthday this week!  We kicked-off our unit in "Specials" class where Mrs. Moore, our librarian, planned "Minute it, to Win it" Dr. Seuss games in the gym.  Teachers and students both competed in quick one-minute games using Dr. Suess' famous books.  Pictures and video will be on Cardinal Nest News (CNN) this week!

The Cat in the Hat

This is the rhyming Flip Book we made!  Students were given the page shown below with rhyming pictures.  They had to find three pictures that rhyme and then glue them on each page of their flip book!  We then read the flip book as a class to practice rhyming words!

Reading The Cat in the Hat would not be complete without making a Dr. Seuss hat!  I must say we looked very "Dr. Seuss-ish" in our class picture!! I sure wish I could show you! :)

We had a great time making this Cat in the Hat project!

Green Eggs and Ham

We made a Green Eggs and Ham snack while we watched the Dr. Seuss video!  Yum!!

We used stamps to find three pictures that rhyme to put on our paper.  The first picture on this photo is of a star (it's hard to see).  We then split the class into two groups, with the help of our Speech Pathologist, and each student took a turn reading their page, since everyone had different rhyming pictures.  Ask your child, to read you their paper at home!

Check back next week for more Dr. Seuss activities!

Dental Health

We "kicked-off" our Dental Health unit by inviting in a local Dentist to come talk to us.  She told us why we need to brush our teeth, how many times a day we should brush,  how to brush, and discussed healthy and unhealthy food with us!  She even gave us a dental goodies to take home!  We enjoyed her very much!

After our guest speaker, we made these fun dental snacks with apples, peanut butter, and marshmallows!

We learned a Dental Song!  "Brush, Brush, Brush, your teeth!  At least 2 times a day!  Cleaning, Cleaning, Cleaning.  Will help fight tooth decay!"  (To the tune of Row, Row, Row, Your Boat)  We then created these GIANT toothbrushes to take home and hang on our bathroom mirror to remind us to brush our teeth twice a day!

We tasted four different kinds of toothpaste: Mint, Kids Sparkle, Bubble Gum, and Cinnamon.  We then graphed our favorite toothpaste!  Clearly we liked Kid's Sparkle and Bubble Gum the best!  Many students were quoted saying, "Mint and Cinnamon were too spicy!"  (I couldn't get the picture to flip, sorry!)

We ended our week discussing healthy and unhealthy foods!  As we learned from the Dentist, it is okay to have unhealthy foods "sometimes" as long as we brush right after we eat them.  It is a much better idea to choose healthy options.  Each student was given this mat and they found healthy and unhealthy foods in magazines!

Some important facts we learned this week that are really important to remember:

*Brush at least twice a day (before bed and before school)
*Remember to brush your tongue too, it has germs on it!
*Brush after eating sugary or unhealthy foods
*Remember to floss everyday
(if you don't know how, have your mom or dad help you!)
*Visit the dentist twice a year to insure your teeth are healthy
*Choose Healthy Foods over Unhealthy Foods
*WHITE milk and water are the best drink choices
*SMILE and show off your healthy shiny TEETH!!
